Top 10 Common G2 Mistakes That Will Fail You in Ontario
Are you preparing for your G2 road test in Ontario? Knowing how to drive smoothly is only half the battle. To pass your test on the first try, you need to know exactly what mistakes DriveTest examiners are looking for.
In the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), unique road layouts, heavy traffic, and constant construction make the G2 test even more challenging. As a professional driving instructor helping students pass their tests daily in Richmond Hill, Markham, North York, Toronto, and Vaughan, I see the same errors repeated over and over.
Consequently, avoiding these blunders is the fastest way to secure your licence. Here are the top common G2 mistakes that lead to an automatic fail or heavy point deductions in Ontario—and how you can avoid them. G2 test mistakes Ontario:
1. Executing a “Rolling Stop”
This is arguably the #1 reason why students fail their G2 test in the GTA. A rolling stop happens when you slow down at a stop sign or red light but let the car creep forward without coming to a dead stop.
-
- The Penalty: Automatic failure (Dangerous Action) or major point deduction.
- How to fix it: Therefore, your vehicle must come to a 100% complete stop behind the stop line or crosswalk. You should feel the weight of the car shift backward. Afterward, count 1, 2, 3 in your head, check your surroundings, and then proceed safely.
2. Missing Blind Spot Checks (The Shoulder Check)
Many students check their mirrors perfectly. However, they often forget their crucial blind spots. Examiners watch your head movements very closely during the entire exam.
-
- The Mistake: Failing to turn your chin to your shoulder before changing lanes, turning right, or pulling away from a curb.
- How to fix it: Make your head movements obvious. Wearing a baseball cap usually helps! Furthermore, every time you turn or change lanes, you must perform the Mirror-Signal-Blind Spot (MSB) routine.
3. Speeding (Especially in School and Construction Zones)
Traffic flow in Toronto and York Region can be very fast. Nevertheless, during your test, you must strictly follow the posted speed limits regardless of other drivers.
-
- The Mistake: Driving even 5 km/h over the limit, or failing to slow down in designated zones.
- How to fix it: Keep a close eye on roadside signs. For instance, areas like Richmond Hill and Markham are packed with school zones where the limit drops to 40 km/h. In addition, construction zones are strictly monitored by examiners.
4. Failing to Yield the Right-of-Way
Understanding who has the right-of-way at intersections, crosswalks, and four-way stops is critical for safety.
-
- The Mistake: Cutting off an oncoming vehicle during a left turn, or moving before your designated turn at a four-way stop.
- How to fix it: As a result of confusion, many students freeze. If you are unsure, err on the side of safety. However, do not hesitate too long because “undue hesitation” can also cost you valuable points.
5. Striking the Curb While Parking
During your G2 test, you will definitely be asked to parallel park, reverse park, or do a roadside stop.
-
- The Mistake: Hard-striking or climbing the curb with your tires.
- How to fix it: Touching the curb gently while parallel parking is usually just a minor point deduction. In contrast, climbing or hitting the curb hard is an automatic failure. Therefore, take your time and use your mirrors effectively.

6. Incorrect Wheel Position on Hills
When asked to perform an uphill or downhill roadside stop, you must position your tires correctly. This ensures the car will not roll into active traffic if the brakes fail.
-
- The Mistake: Turning the wheels the wrong way or completely forgetting the parking brake.
- How to fix it: Remember the acronym U.C.R. (Uphill With Curb = Turn wheels Left/Towards the road). For all other scenarios, such as uphill without a curb or downhill, turn your wheels Right/Towards the curb. Furthermore, always engage your parking brake!
7. Improper Lane Selection After a Turn
In Ontario, you must always drive in the right-most lane unless you are turning left or overtaking another vehicle.
-
- The Mistake: Turning left into the left lane and staying there indefinitely.
- How to fix it: First, complete your left turn into the leftmost lane. Subsequently, check your mirrors, do a blind-spot check to the right, signal, and smoothly transition into the right lane when it is safe to do so.
8. Not Checking Mirrors Every 3-5 Seconds
Examiners want to see that you are constantly aware of your environment, not just looking straight ahead.
-
- The Mistake: Developing “tunnel vision” by staring only at the car directly in front of you.
- How to fix it: You should scan your rearview mirror and side mirrors every 3 to 5 seconds. In addition, make sure to check your rearview mirror every single time you prepare to press the brake.
9. Poor Steering Wheel Control (Palming the Wheel)
How you hold and turn the wheel matters greatly to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards.
-
- The Mistake: Steering with only one hand, letting the wheel slide back loosely, or “palming” the wheel.
- How to fix it: Keep two hands on the wheel at all times using the 9-and-3 or 10-and-2 positions. Consequently, you should use the hand-over-hand or push-pull technique when making sharp turns.
10. Following Too Closely (Tailgating)
GTA traffic can get heavily congested. However, maintaining a safe stopping distance is mandatory during the driving exam.
-
- The Mistake: Stopping too close to the vehicle ahead at a red light or stop sign.
- How to fix it: Use the famous “Tires and Tarmac” rule. When stopped behind another car, you should easily see their rear tires touching the ground, plus a small patch of the actual road.
